Benicar Medical Literature Explains Why Patients Are Harmed
Physicians have been studying patients who suffer gastrointestinal and abdominal side effects and complications. Recent medical literature from the Mayo Clinic shows that an active ingredient in the drug, Olmesartan, is the likely cause of the damage to the intestine that leads to this harm. Click here to read the Mayo Clinic article. As researchers continue to study this drug we expect to learn even more, for example the other consequences such as potential immune disorders.
Benicar Class Action Lawsuit
On April 3, 2015, all Federal lawsuits claiming injuries due to Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor and Tribenzor, were assigned to a Federal Judge in the District Court in New Jersey. Mazie Slater partner Adam Slater has been appointed plaintiffs’ co-lead counsel for the Federal Litigation. There are also cases filed in New Jersey State Court, since the manufacturer is in New Jersey.
Benicar causes a GI condition known as olmesartan associated enteropathy, also known as sprue-like enteropathy, which causes symptoms similar to those of Celiac Disease, such as diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and related medical problems. If you or a loved one was diagnosed with this condition or experienced side effects similar to, or diagnosed as, Celiac Disease, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s Disease, or diverticulitis while taking Benicar, our Benicar attorneys may be able to help.
FDA Warns Benicar Use Causes Gastrointestinal Injuries
On July 3, 2013, the FDA issued a warning that the blood pressure medication olmesartan medoxomil (marketed as Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor, Tribenzor, and in the generic form as olmesartan medoxomil) can cause sprue-like enteropathy. According to the FDA Safety Announcement, this GI disorder can cause symptoms that include severe, chronic diarrhea with substantial weight loss. The condition may take months or years to develop or be diagnosed and may require hospitalization. In 2012, researchers from the Mayo Clinic found that patients taking the hypertension medicine displayed symptoms suggestive of Celiac Disease. When patients stopped taking the drug, their GI symptoms improved.
Can I File a Benicar Class Action Lawsuit?
Our law firm can help determine whether you can file a lawsuit against Daiichi Sankyo, manufacturer of Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor, Tribenzor and generics, and potentially other companies, for selling unsafe drugs, and the failure to warn doctors and patients about the risks. We are also investigating the opportunity for a class action lawsuit.
How Can Filing a Lawsuit Help Me?
If the Benicar lawsuit is successful, you may be entitled to collect compensation for all current and future medical expenses related to the treatment of your GI disorder, as well as for pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, and for lost income and wages.
